Company Profile

kegawazoku (Leader: Junko Emoto/ Playwright, Director and Actress)

kegawazoku was launched as a theatrical company staging works written and directed by Junko Emoto in September, 2000.
Their performances had been characterized in roaring and entertaining script in their first few years. In 2004, they could collect 4,000 people of audience in Ekimae Theater for long-run production and they advanced into performing in prestigious Honda Theater in 2005 in the fastest speed among other companies. In 2006, they started minimum and light theatrical series against their regular style of creating splendid stages. They created many of conversational plays and absurd plays in the series.
They started their new project, "Gekidan, Emoto Junko"series in 2009. They create both works as "kegawazoku"intensively seeking for pleasure with eroticism, humor and silliness and works as "Gekidan, Emoto Junko" seeking for excellent quality as conversational plays.
As of 2008, they are based in small theaters in Tokyo as a company of works written and directed by Junko Emoto.

Ort-d.d (Leader: Koji Kurasako/Director)

Launched as a unit of modern theatrical art "Ort" in 2000. Mainly played famous literature works and ready-made scripts such as modern Japanese literature by Soseki Natsume, Yukio Mishima, Rampo Edogawa.
And on the other hand, played works based on children's literature, "Tale of Circus", "The wizard of OZ", and "Pollanno Square".
They were invited to many international performing arts festivals such as Tokyo International Arts Festival, BeSeTo Performing Arts Festival in Korea, and Spring Arts Festival Shizuoka.
They also perform in projects for children like "Tobidase! Kodomo Bungaku" series by MEDIKIT Arts Center in Miyazaki and "Performing Arts for children" series by Toshima-ku. Their performances are held in Tokyo National Museum, Asian Gallary, Jiyu Gakuen Myounichi-kan, and Zenkoji Temple which are the important cultural properties. In 2008, they started their activity as a professional theaterical company "Ort-d.d" based in Nishi-Sugamo Arts Factory. They are unique as a community-based theater company in Tokyo.

Shigeki Nakano + frankens (Leader: Shigeki Nakano/ Director)

Launched in 2003, a modern theatrical company specialized in translated scripts. They are characterized in freewheeling style of arranging foreign classical scripts into cutting-edge performances. They basically don't change the outline of the originals but they insert additional stories and lead the audience to different path in their script. They value more on periodical gathering as a group like classroom and individual activities rather than performing as a production. The member of the company is one director and eight actors and actresses. Their recent works are "Atatakai Hyogaki" (based on "Il Servitore di due Padroni" by Goldoni), "Asobi Hanbun" (Based on "The Playboy of the Western World" by Synge) and "44 Macbeth" and etc.

FujiyamaAnnette (Leader: Nay Hasegawa/ Playwright, Director, choreographer and Actor)

They started their activity in 2003, by Hitoshi Hasegawa as playwright, director and choreographer. They express creative visual based on physical expressions and performances and bold usage of space. These days they introduce theatrical method and transformed into "dance-like theater" (theaterants) where they raise their body according to the script. They won the theatrical prize in Free Stage by Setagaya Public Theater in 2007, won the prize in BankART Cafe Series in 2008, and won the prize in the Creation Support Project by Kawasaki Art Center in 2009. In 2008, they provided image of their performance to HAPPYSYSTEM in Zurich, Switzerland. In April, 2009, they were also invited to Esplanade, Singapore and performed there.

太陽[THE SUN]

Dainanagekijo (Leader: Kohei Narumi/ Director)

Dainanagekijo was launched in 1999 by Kohei, director and few other actors. They continuously have physical training in unique way. They create works with the essence of Japanese classical performing arts, Noh and Kabuki, Buto and contemporary dance and etc. They are seeking their own way of expression which is different from those of on TV or Movies and "Theatrical growth of literature" They also work for the study and improvement of the current situation of theatricals. They are based in Tokyo but they travel not only in Japan but foreign countries and participate in many international performing arts festivals globally.
In 2006, they built their own atelier SENTIO in Tokyo with Unique Point.

chelfitsch (Leader: Toshiki Okada/ Playwright and Novelist)

Toshiki Okada writes and directs all works for this unit. Name of the company, "chelfitsch" was created like a baby word in a way that "selfish" meaning egocentric was not pronounced well because of its childishness. Since they performed "Behold Their Hopes!" in 2001, they tend to use colloquialism for younger generation in their scripts.
They won the 49th Kunio Kishida dramatic award for "Five Days in March". "Five Days in March" was also invited to the contemporary art festival in Brussels called "KUNSTENFESTIVALDESARTS" in 2007 and got praiseworthy response.
These days they are invited to many international festivals in Asia, Europe and North America. In 2007, they performed "Five Days in March" as a special performance invited to 30 years anniversary of National Museum of Art and Mori Museum's exhibition called "Roppongi Clossing -Pulse for the future -"
Their representative works are "On the Harmful Effects of Marijuana" in 2003, "Air Conditioner" in 2004, "Five Days in March" in 2004, "The End of Toil" in 2005, "Destination" in 2005 and "Freetime" in 2008 and etc.

Hyottoko Ranbu (Leader: Junichi Hirota/ Playwright and Director)

Founded in 2001. They are seeking "big lie only possible in theatricals" and aiming to create "Best entertainment for audience living in modern Japan". They perform 3 times a year with their original scripts. They are characterized in theatrical expressions with both feeling of speed and faintness introducing musical elements such as clapping and body percussion.
Junichi Hirota won the best prize in Young director's award in 2004 by Japan Director's Association for his work, "Mudai no Mu". They also won the best director's prize and the best performer's prize and other 7 prizes in Sakichi Sato Award in 2005 by Oji Small Theater.
Their recent works are "Ginpatsu", "Trabisya", "Ainikite" and "Plastic Lemon" and etc.

shelf (Leader: Yasuhito Yano/ Director)

The shelf with various piled up texts is used as a motif for their activity. They emphasis on "narrative" and keep on creating works based on classics and modern scripts. They are characterized in its unique awareness to the same period of time, its sense of beauty toward space and time and their acting method that they give way their energy out of their quiet posture.
Their representative works are "R.U.R. a second presentation" by Karel Capek, "Composition/Ibsen" by Henrik Ibsen, "Fragment/ Greek Tragedy" by Euripides, "Little Eyolf" by Henrik Ibsen and etc.
They won "The best person of the theater" in 2008 and won "Jury's special award" in Nagoya civic Performing Arts Festival in 2008 both for their work, "Little Eyolf".
